In a previous article, we talked about affiliate marketing vocabulary and defined these internet marketing terms that you should be familiar with. In this article, we are going to talk about how you can get the best affiliate marketing commissions.

So, the question is, “just how much money will I make?”

The possibilities are endless, and the limits are as you define them. It really is up to you, but let’s start by ensuring you get the best affiliate commissions possible.

Step 1 to getting the best Affiliate Marketing Commissions - What’s the commission?
When considering affiliate programs, the first thing to look at is, how much affiliate marketing commission you can get per sale. This can either be portrayed as a percentage, or as flat out figure or amount. If the commission is presented as a fixed figure, it is important to know the sale price of the product, and figure out the percentage.

It is best to go for an affiliate program that offers a 50% commission. But if a product is high priced, you may consider going as low as a 20% or 30% commission. As a rule for lower priced products, don’t go for anything less than 50% on the 1st tier.

Step 2 to getting the best Affiliate Marketing Commissions - Income Targeting
Most people make the mistake of getting into something, without knowing what they are shooting for. Admit that you are getting into affiliate marketing to make money online in the form of the affiliate commission, so start out by identifying a target income from affiliate marketing. Once you know how much you would like to earn in a month for example, you should then consider how many sales it will take to earn that target income you identified. If you join an affiliate program for a product that earns you 50.00 per sale, and you want to make 500.00 per month, then you would need to sell 10 products to hit your target. If you want to make 1,000.00 then, you simply need to make 20 successful sales transactions.

Knowing how much sales you want to make will help you out in the third step, which you will read about soon. But note that while this is a very practical and realistic approach for some products, or in some markets, this may not apply to other products in other markets. Consider what you are selling, and whom you are selling it to, as the size of the market, the demand and your competition will affect your projections, and directly influence the number of sales you could make.

Targets should be realistic, and if the number of sales required is not realistic, you will need to either look for something different to sell, or look for additional products to sell. You may also start small with smaller commissions, then work your way up like super affiliates. Super affiliates often show the product owner/affiliate manager that they have the ability to make a large number of sales each and every month and this is usually because they have a huge mailing lists to market to or have several high traffic websites that they could use to push the products. The super affiliates negotiate directly with the product owner for a higher commission due to the amount of sale volume that they can deliver. They prove themselves by making those sales first, and then they are in a position to negotiate.

Step 3 to getting the best Affiliate Marketing Commissions - Cost to Promote

After considering a product’s affiliate program commission, and how much sales you need to hit your targets, you now need to consider what it will cost you to promote the product.

One of the fastest ways to promote a product is through search engine advertising. This gives you instant advertising exposure on search engines for keywords search for by your potential customers. A good tip to remember is not to spend more on search engine advertising than the amount of affiliate marketing commissions you earn. You simply cannot afford to spend more on promotions than commissions received!

The cost to promote is also defined as the amount required for you to spend, in order to drive traffic to your website or webpage that has your affiliate link. There are many ways to drive traffic and with varying costs, you just need to identify what you deem to be the best way to drive traffic to your site and make sure you are not in the red.
