I write this post in an internet cafe in a mall…. my internet connection at home went out.. it broke… nothing more to say except that, technology is not at all reliable.

A few posts ago I spoke of a strategy on how to get traffic to your site at the same time get some SEO points, and that was by leaving comments on other people’s blogs. However, though this may give you some traffic by way of direct site referral, it may not help you as far as getting that link counted as a quality link from the site you left a comment on, if they have the “nofollow” attribute activated. If you do not know what I am talking about, best to please read this other post first about Blog Marketing or promoting your blog.

However there is a bit of confusion on how exactly the search engines interpret this and more confusion among bloggers on how this impacts their promotional efforts.

Well, in searching for a way to solve this I chanced upon this article on Search Engine Journal, which specifically indicated each of the major search engines treatment of the no follow attribute. This is a good read.

The the most important thing to note is, if Google sees a no follow link, it does not follow that link, and does give PR or attribution to the site being linked. This could be in the form of counting the link as a quality link, and does not count the anchor text used either. So it does not help you SEO wise.

But a couple of other search engines do follow, read about it here on How Google, Yahoo & Ask.com Treat the No Follow Link Attribute by Loren Baker.

One Response to “Oh, But Some DO Follow!”

I use the do follow plugin on my comments now (it will disable the no follow), but I also use no follow on certain links as well. I think it is important to keep up with the effects for each, and use them where appropriate. Scott
