Getting the right domain name for you, your website or your online business is a key factor in success online. Choose your domain name wisely; however this is not a post about how to choose domain names or how to register one, if you would like to know more about that you can click this link on Domain Name Registration.
I’d like to tell you a story that happened just this week, and hopefully you would know what to do should you be in the same situation.
Domain name registration is big business online, people register all sorts of domain names and domain name combinations even if they do not use these for websites or for business. They simply just register them, make them unavailable and park them, waiting for potential buyers… then of course sell them to these interested buyers for a premium price. Yes it sucks, but that is how things are now.
So, that means you could probably be interested in registering your domain name but can’t get it because someone owns it, is not using it, and you might have to get it at higher price. The worst part is, anyone can register any domain name, even if they have absolutely nothing to do with it, like somebody could probably register roysencio.com, can hold it until someone like me who would need it, would want to buy it from them. Of course, that was just an example, who would want roysencio.com except myself anyways.
There are several websites with specific names, like celebrity names, or specific brands of products or establishments that are actually not owned by the product owners themselves, but by other individuals who use that domain name in order to gain web traffic to their site because of the popularity of that domain name.
That is not the story either, I’m just bringing you up to speed with domain names.
The story is, a friend of mine had a problem with a domain name, because she wanted to register the domain name “pasecebu.com” because the business they run is called “Paseo “. However the possible domain names they were interested were all unavailable, some owned by legitimately owned online businesses, while others were just parked. There are no restrictions on the number of domain names anyone can register, however there are copyright restrictions for major brands.
So the guys at Paseo could not get the domain names that they wanted, which were basically about their business. I mean just picture this, there is a chance you cannot get the right domain name for your business because someone owns it, someone who probably has nothing to do with the business.. it’s just hilarious and annoying at the same time, but it is the way things work and the way things are.
What does this all mean to you?
If you are thinking of putting up a website, whether for personal or business reasons, you have to take a lot of factors into consideration, and domain names are not the last things to consider, domain names are just as important as other critical elements like your web developer, design team, web hosting plan, etc. Some people buy domain names and purchase all possible .com’s, .info’s, .net’s, etc; if only to prevent a similar site coming up with a different suffix.
Your domain name is your address on the web, so if you don’t want your potential web traffic losing their way because of a complicated domain name or a domain name that are too hard to remember. Your domain should at least also give your visitor some hint or clue or idea of what to find or expect on your website.
Again if you need tips on deciding on a domain name, you can check out the link earlier, or send me a message; I’d be glad to help.
