If you are wondering whether or not pay per click is better than a Yellow Pages ad for getting customers aware of your company, you are going to want to understand how important pay per click is for your company. Last century, the Yellow Pages played an important role, but now pay per click has taken over and is now the best way to get your name (and contact information) out for people to see. If you don’t know why the Yellow Pages are dead, you may be a bit confused. Here is why you need pay per click for your business.
The telephone book has become obsolete in a lot of households. In fact, the only time you use it is to look up the number for your favorite restaurant - the rest of the time it just sits around getting in your way because it is big and bulky. Take your telephone book down and see how old it is - chances are it is not the current edition. Now, think about how you find all of the other telephone numbers that you need - you go to your computer. When you enter something into a search engine the results that you get are going to be pretty accurate. Of course there is a ton of junk out there, but searching for something specific (like your city name and the name of the fish restaurant that you love) is going to give you instant results. If you are computer savvy (or even computer proficient), you are probably going to find that locating information is faster on the computer than in the Yellow Pages.
You shouldn’t get a pay per click advertisement just because it is more convenient than the Yellow Page ad. A pay per click ad is going to reach a lot of people - the only requirement is Internet access, which most people have in their homes and almost everyone has access to somewhere. Plus, it is easier to find something online than it is in a book, so a pay per click makes a lot of sense. Another advantage is that you are going to have a wider audience, instead of just the local Yellow Pages area. A pay per click campaign is going to give you access to anyone on the net.
The final reason to get on the pay per click wagon is that a lot of telephone companies have put their Yellow Pages online. Now, some telephone companies aren’t even giving out free annual Yellow Page directories anymore. By advertising in the Yellow Pages, the number of people who see your ad is restricted to local people who get this book. A pay per click ad is going to expand, not limit the number of people seeing your ad.
The next time someone asks you why you don’t have a Yellow Page ad, you can tell them that you are using your advertising budget wisely by investing in a pay per click campaign.

Ryan,
Well-put. People have been predicting the demise of yellow pages and the rise of local PPC for years now– but the change isn’t happening overnight, just like old habits die hard.
Maybe current financial climate will cause people to evaluate their budgets more carefully, and shift to performance-based mediums like pay per click, where companies like yours and mine excel.
Best,
Dennis
