TGIF!
The weekend is again upon, aren’t you glad to finally get your mind of work and spend time at home, or on a new hobby, or doing something different… heck thinking of something different other than the usual work related thoughts is good enough for me.
I realize I haven’t been posting much lately, the past couple of weeks have been a bit crazy. It is a good kind of busy though when you hear the ka-ching… cash registers going off in the background; all the time.
If you are also in business I’m pretty sure you love the sound of that too.
But now that I have finally found the time to blog, I’d like to tell you about one key factor that most business owners overlook, and these days it is a necessary component that can mean a business’ success or failure.
Back in the old days, having a good business simply meant having a good product or service that is well priced, promoting it well, having a good location or distribution network, and having a good market that patronizes your products and services.
In my fifteen years in advertising and marketing other people’s brands, I’ve thought up all sorts of ads and campaigns to help my clients get new business, get new customers. The primary reason they did that is… no matter what sort of industry you are in, no matter what kind of business or service you sell, the absolute fact is, you will always lose a percentage of your customers; you lose them to competition; you
lose them because of some sort of disappointment; you lose them because they probably moved to another town, another city. Heck, bottom line is, on a regular basis, you lose customers for a myriad of reasons, and because of that fact business owners had to constantly advertise, or constantly had to have some marketing campaign going. Luckily for me that need for advertising has kept me around all these years… but that is not what this blog is about.
If you notice, the stress there is about customer acquisition; exerting efforts to get new business and new clients… what a lot of store owners, restauranteurs, retail store operators and all these other people in business do not realize is that they are overlooking a goldmine that they were already sitting on in the first place.
They spent so much time, money and effort in acquiring new customers, they overlook retention of customers and making money off the back end. Many people underestimate the power of repeat buys, customers are more likely to buy from you if they had already done so before and were satisfied with the purchase… all it takes is to ask them, all it takes it to be able to make an offer… all it takes is to actually be able to communicate with them instantly and when you need to and not wait until the next time they swing by your store which could be weeks, months.. who knows! If this is the way you are running your business, I wouldn’t say your losing money, but you could be making so much more.
What exactly am I saying?
Let me ask you a few questions.
Do you have a business? YES! (I am assuming you are answering out loud, go ahead and so, it makes this experience more fun)
You sell a product or service to customers? YES!
Your customers come to your store, restaurant, bowling alley or what have you? YES!
You spend a huge amount of money for print ads, radio ads, and maybe TV ads? YES!
Do you know exactly, and I mean in actual figures.. how many people caught those ads, and gave you a conversion? I think I hear crickets.
Let me paraphrase that question, do you know exactly your conversion rate for every impression from your print ad, radio ad or TV ad? The silence is deafening.
Put simply… do you know your cost per conversion?
I might have been asking you too many questions with even more complicated answers, so let me ask you one last simple question.
Do you currently have a list of customers that you can directly market to, send out messages and advertising to each time you have a new line you wish to promote, or if you have a sale, or if you simply want to ask them if they were happy with their recent purchase?
If you do… good… I hope you know what to do with that list and are doing it right.
If you don’t… its probably time you considered having one.
If you spent a great deal on advertising, to bring a customer into your store and make a purchase, make sure to be able to contact him directly so you won’t have to depend on expensive mass media advertising to hope that he hears about your new sale.. you can simply send them an email.
Do not underestimate the power of the list.
Speaking of lists, in internet marketing a list is what most internet marketers build and rely upon to make thousands upon thousand of dollars in online sales and purchases.
