Viral marketing is a means of promoting a business through the use of images, games, e-books, etc. Usually one will come into contact with this type of marketing nearly everytime he or she opens their internet browser. The goal of viral marketing is to persuade the consumers to pass on the information to their friends and family.
Because the intent of viral marketing is to spread messages through forwarding to colleagues and friends, it’s emerging as an increasingly successful strategy. This is primarily because customers who react positively to products will usually spread the good word to those they know.
This method shows up on nearly every business website. If a site buys or sells anything, chances are there’s advertisments on the home page. Nearly everyone at one time or another has recieved a product or used a service because of viral marketing.
Although this practice is intended to be positive, it can turn heads the other way as well. For example, the pyramid scheme, that is promoted by many “get rich quick” scams, has proven to be harmful in the business world. Although it started out well, the idea of building your business through the “pyramid method” quickly turned out to be something to avoid.
One tool that has dramatically increased the effects of viral techniques is email. Even though email used to promote products or services may lead to it being reported as ’spam’, marketing through email has proven helpful for narrowing down the target audience for a specific business.
Another method implemented through viral marketing is the use of online games to promote products or services. For example, some companies devise games that appeal to young adults, but they also incorporate their business through the game as well. In this way, advertising has been made fun for the business and the consumer.
Video clips also prove to be helpful in this type of advertising, because it gives the business a chance to personally connect with the customer. It eliminates the need for further explanation or confusion that may result from traditional marketing methods.
Properly planned, a Viral marketing campaign can be a boon to any successful company. It can easily generate positive feedback and even increase product sales. Overall, when it is used effectively, viral marketing can be a very useful and innovative marketing tool.
